David Farragut led a fleet of 4 ironclads and 12 wooden warships in an attack on Mobile Harbor on August 5, 1864, seizing one of the last seaports that traded with Europe.

While he did effectively close Mobile Bay with his victory, Fort Morgan didn't actually surrender until besieged by land a few weeks later. This in turn came after the surrender of Fort Gaines, which had been under semi-siege by Granger prior to Farragut's attack.

Moble itself did not fall until the last days of the war, following the storming of Fort Blakeley.
