The hill on the land owned by Henry Culp is 3/4 mile south of Gettysburg and it formed the "barb" of the fish hook shaped positions held by the Army Of The Potomac on July 2, and was the highest ground on the northern end of the battlefield. If the rebels captured it, it would dominate Cemetery Hill and Stevens Knoll, the other prominence immediately south of town, and make the Union position untenable.
