They don't have this foolishness in Russia or China or in other European countries where colleges value academics over sports. Maybe they should have club sports instead. Except for the loot, this is a big fat loser for every one involved. Especially for fans who just want HONEST competition without the politics & corruption of college football.

The University if Chicago pulled out of big time FB many years ago thanks to the foresight of its President at the time. He saw the seeds of corruption and recognized the hypocrisy of mixing education with the likes of the business.

Sports were and are designed as a distraction for the masses. A bread and circus. Most get so involved that the sport/s of choice becomes their lives. That is one part why they were created. All of them. Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, never existed until invented. The elites needed their bread and circuses.

That it has become corrupted by big money does not obviate the value of sports in general. Need to get back to having EVERYONE participate in sports of ALL kinds, not just the ‘major’ ones.
Fact is, through ESPN, etc, we have INFINITELY more/better coverage of ‘sports’ in general then we do of politics. THAT says something about the control of Empire over the media: non-essential activities can be (generally) honestly and openly reported on; the eee-vil that Empire does disappears down the memory hole that day.

But in 1984, schools sued the NCAA for the right to control their own TV deals. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. The NCAA lost.

This is what would lead to the explosion in television money. It’s what made schools and conferences rich. But at the time, it was seen as a real setback for the NCAA.

Woo... College sports has corrupted academia... I have been calling for all college team sports to be pulled out of colleges and make them club sports... The club could pay the college for naming rights and use of the facilities until other alternatives come along in the future... Sports must be taken out college at least the money making ones... The ones that have corrupted academia... Just look at college football did not care one bit about their players in the middle of pandemic... Remember, the coaches belly aching about not playing... Football, basketball, baseball, soccer should be club sports associated with a college but not part of the college...

Americans prize sports in schools over academic excellence; I noticed the other countries don't have high school or college sports. Why do other nations don't have college or high school sports? https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2013/10/the-case-against-high-school-sports/309447/

A big part of the problem with major college athletics, especially football, is that the goal isn't to balance the conferences and schedules to determine the best team.

prize sports in schools
I do not think high school sports is a big issue for there is no big money in it. If money does show up, I would be worried then. High school sports is more of a cultural event in our society... I like the link but academics still has a place in our high schools and I graduated my youngest from high school a year ago and he was an academic kid. I saw no barriers to him...

major college athletics,
NO, I do not care if colleges realign their conferences... I hoping UCF will end up in a power five conference or their conference replaces the Big 12 as a Power 5 conference... In the end its all about TV money... TV money corrupted our college sports and our national politics... Money sports need to be pull out of Colleges...

The beginning of the end of the empire... the was in the video...

Why did Ed O'Bannon sue the NCAA?
NCAA is an antitrust class action lawsuit filed against the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). ... On August 8, 2014, District Judge Claudia Wilken found for O'Bannon, holding that the NCAA's rules and bylaws operate as an unreasonable restraint of trade, in violation of antitrust law.

Snip... I think in the end Ed won but it seems the lost.. I do read where money was given to Ed and the others... and EA sports just cut them out of the next games but still paid the NCAA fees... the lawyers got paid but where's ED's money...

.

Trial and verdict[edit]
The trial against the NCAA lasted from June 9 to June 27, 2014.[17] Final written closing statements were submitted on July 10.[18]

On August 8, 2014, Wilken ruled that the NCAA's long-held practice of barring payments to athletes violated antitrust laws.[19] She ordered that schools should be allowed to offer full cost-of-attendance scholarships to athletes, covering cost-of-living expenses that were not currently part of NCAA scholarships. Wilken also ruled that college be permitted to place as much as $5,000 into a trust for each athlete per year of eligibility.[20]

The NCAA subsequently appealed the ruling,[20] arguing that Wilken did not properly consider NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma. In that case, the NCAA was denied control of college football television rights. [21] The Supreme Court denied the NCAA's appeal. [22] The NCAA was also ordered to pay the plaintiffs $42.2 million in fees and costs. [23]

Aftermath[edit]
As a result of O'Bannon, a number of other class-action lawsuits filed by student athletes against the NCAA and colleges followed, challenging other restrictions on educational funds as being anti-competitive. These were combined into a single suit also heard by Judge Wilken, who ruled against the NCAA in March 2019 and required the NCAA to allow students to obtain other non-cash scholarships, internships and other support beyond the full cost-of-attendeance for academic purposes.[24] The Ninth Circuit upheld the ruling on appeal, which the Supreme Court affirmed in a unanimous decision in June 2021 in National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Alston.[25][26] On July 1, 2021, the NCAA announced the board had agreed to new rules that removed restrictions on college athletes from entering paid endorsements and other sponsorship deals, and from using agents to manage their publicity. Students would still be required to inform the school of all such activities, with the school to make determinations if those activities violate state and local laws.[27]

EA Sports, which had published the NCAA-sports based games, left that market; NCAA Basketball 10 (published in 2009) was the final game in that series, while the NCAA terminated its license with EA during the events of O'Bannon after the release of NCAA Football 14 (published in 2013) over licensing rates.[28] In February 2021, EA Sports subsequently announced a new series that would be called EA Sports College Football they expect to launch in 2023 which will not use any player likenesses to respect the ruling of O'Bannon, bypassing the NCAA, but will still license college logos, uniforms, and stadiums through the Collegiate Licensing Company.[29]

Here is a link if lawyers types want to read... and explain it to us...

They're sissified foreigners...
I wouldn't go that far. Other nations do have college sports but it is not big business which is a good thing in my opinion.

Japan has college sports that are comparable to those of the US; check out the Tokyo Big 6 and the Kanto Big 6, along with the "Rice Bowl."

Mexico, Chile and a few other Latin American states also arguably (depending on one's perspective) have a more prominent college sports culture than the US; The UNAM Pumas or Club Universidad de Chile put the Texas Longhorns or Alabama Crimson Tide to shame.

A few European Universities also have major, entirely professional, athletic programs, like the University of Combria, who play in their respective nation's top level football leagues, though this is not the norm.

China is also trying to develop a major college athletics league for it's more prominent universities, especially in basketball (CUBA).

I agree. However, this is an interesting article about the downsides of club sports in Europe.

It is unfortunate that music and art are not valued like sports which in my opinion has more value. Sports has it benefits but people still love and remember Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and other classical music. Who knows about who won a cricket championship in the 18th or 19th century?
Same thing wish Shakespeare and other great works of art and literature.

People have fond memories of the music of the 60s and 70s but hardly anybody knows who won Olympic medals during that time. Those individuals are largely irrelevant. The music of Michael Jackson is going to be remembered centuries from now but not the sports competitions of the 80s and 90s.

I didn't know that their was Art competitions during the Olympics.

Here the list of winning artist who won medals at the Olympics... Does anybody recognize any of the names... At the link...

They were featured at the Olympics so they are not memorable.

The great works of Socrates, Aesop, Shakespeare and other great writers of literature and art is still remembered to this day. Nobody knows who the athletes from the ancient Greek Olympic games are. We can hear and read great music and literature and it will stand the test of time but sports competitions are fleeting.
