Starving the cities to feed the suburbs
A new report finds that of the $450 billion the federal government spends on real estate each year, the lion’s share subsidizes suburban growth -- at the expense of both cities and the planet.grist.org
How so? As a new report illustrates, a variety of federal policies that go by other names are actually public investments in housing and other development. The report, “Federal involvement in real estate: A call for examination,” by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Smart Growth America, adds it all up and finds approximately $450 billion each year in subsidies.
These public dollars, the report argues, collectively create an incentive for suburban sprawl and redistribute income from the poor to the rich. So much for the “war on suburbia.”
The average American thinks suburbia subsidizes the inter-city and as we know that wise tale needs to be dispelled...what else is new?
because modern (especially american) cities are for cars and not peopleHow much of your city in a parking lot this link and article has a map and tells you the percentages of it is parking lots. It says 33 percent of Orlando is a parking lot downtown but trust me there is not much parking for the public down there... It a good article, city planners by law are mandated so many parking spot per business... Like in California many parking lots stay empty most of the day...
