October 21, 1863 - Action at Cherokee Station, AL, on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.
Here a little action.. NYTimes...

On the 21st the advance of the Union forces eastward from Corinth met with resistance near Cherokee Station, eighty-nine miles from Tuscumbia.

Gen. OSTERHAUS was in the advance and had not moved far when he encountered two brigades of rebel cavalry, under Gens. LEE and FORREST, estimated at 4,000 to 6,000 men.

The fight lasted an hour when the rebels were driven back with severe loss.

Our loss was seven killed and thirty-seven wounded, most of which was caused by mistaking LEE's cavalry, who were dressed in blue overcoats, for our own forces.

The rebels are said to have very strong fortifications this side of Tuscumbia, on the railroad.

Rebel prisoners report that the enemy expect to make a stout resistance there. They say they had 4,000 men there on Thursday, and received reinforcements of 1,000 cavalry on Wednesday, and that 2,000 more were expected from Gen. BRAGG's forces.

I want to point out to @diane that this battle was another defeat of Forrest... What do the Forrest fans say now?

Cherokee Station - not the greatest outcome there, but the overall objective was achieved. However...you have the wrong Forrest! Cherokee Station was commanded by Col Jesse A Forrest, who was wounded in the thigh.

Some day I'd like to see somebody put together a book on the Forrest brothers. They operated all around each other like the gears on a well oiled machine. Big brother gets the spotlight, but little brothers did a lot of what I call lynch pin work. The little stuff that made the big stuff possible - like clearing out this garrison at Cherokee Station. They rarely screwed up but...everybody has a bad day! Forrest was a big pain in Grant's posterior but his brothers were a headache, too. Whenever someone gave Grant a report Forrest was in the area he'd snap, "Which one?"
