September 29, 1864 - The Battle of Poplar Spring Church, including combats at Wyatt's, Peebles', and Pegram's Farms, Chappell House, and the Vaughan Road, Richmond, VA, Campaign, as Lieut. Gen. A. P. Hill, CSA, beats back the Union offensive. However, the Union lines are extended which further stretches the already thin Rebel lines. (Sep 29-Oct 2)

A minor battle in some thought but it was part of Grants grind Lee forces down and extend the line further west... It was called the Union Army Fifth offensive of the Siege of Petersburg...

From Wiki...

General Lee saw the ultimate danger in a letter he wrote to Wade Hampton two days after the Battle of Battle of Peebles' Farm (or Poplar Springs Church) where he said that if the Union Army could not be stopped from extending its left flank, they would reach the Appomattox River and cut Confederate forces off from the south side altogether. That eventually occurred as Lee feared.

Lee's fear came true 6 months later...
