The "Battle of Liberty Place" monument memorialized the attempted coup by the White League in New Orleans that hastened the end of Reconstruction. According to the monument's inscription, the insurrection ultimately triumphed when the Federal government "recognized white supremacy" because of the sacrifices of the White League. This installment in our series on the White League looks at the erection of the monument during the Jim Crow period of Confederate memorialization and how the white people of New Orleans commemorated the battle as a heroic victory for the white race until long after the advent of the modern Civil Rights Movement. https://thereconstructionera.com/the-white-league-monument-at-liberty-place-in-new-orleans/
