October 21, 1861 - Operations on the Potomac, near Leesburg, VA, including: Engagement (or Battle of) Ball's Bluff, or of Leesburg, VA, and the resulting skirmish on the Leesburg road (Oct 21). The Union troops are ferried across the Potomac here and downstream at Edwards Ferry, and March up the steep banks; they are pressed back, with many killed as they leap down the steep banks while many others drown as they attempt to re-cross the Potomac. The Confederates under Brig. Gen. Nathan George "Shanks" Evans, CSA, rout the Federals, under Brig. Gen. Charles Pomeroy Stone, USA. Although taking direct orders from Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan, Gen. Stone's military career is destroyed with the untimely death of Maj. Gen. Edward Dickinson Baker, USA, who is also a Senator from Oregon, and a close personal friend of President Lincoln.
