August 13, 1861 - William Farrar Smith, USA, and Brig. Gen. George Stoneman, USA, are appointed Brig. Gen.

August 13, 1861 - President Jefferson Davis, CSA, orders that the Honorable Thomas A. R. Nelson, of Tennessee, for opposing secession, be discharged.

August 13, 1861 - Skirmish near Grafton, WV.

August 13, 1862 - Skirmish on Yellow Creek, or Muscle Fork, Chariton River, MO, results in a Confederate defeat.

August 13, 1862 - Engagement on the Black River, SC, some 20 miles above Georgetown, SC.

August 13, 1862 - Skirmish at Huntsville, Scott County, TN.

August 13, 1864 - Federal operations about Shawneetown, IL, against Pro-Southerns, as Maj. Gen. Samuel P. Heintzelman, USA, commanding the Northern Dept., order troops to move against Col. Johnson who captured 3 steamers loaded with Government cattle and crossed the Ohio River near Shawneetown into Illinois.

August 13, 1864 - Skirmishes at Hurricane Creek, MS, with Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, contesting the advance of Brig. Gen. Joseph A. Mower, USA. (Aug 13-14)

August 13, 1864 - Federal operations under Maj. Gen. Alfred Pleasonton, USA, commanding the District of Central Missouri, against guerrillas, including William Clarke Quantrill, in La Fayette, Saline, and Howard Counties, MO, with skirmishes. (Aug 13-22)

August 13, 1864 - The CSS Tallahassee captures and burns two more Federal vessels off the coast of New York.

August 13, 1864 - Affair at Berryville, VA, the Shenandoah Valley, VA, Campaign.

August 15, 1861

A Fight near Grafton:Twenty-one Guerrilla's Killed.
Grafton, Aug. 14.:A severe skirmish took place a few miles west of here yesterday on the Fairmont and Webster road, information having been rec[e]ived that a secretly organized body of rebels living in this county were lodged within a few miles of Webster, Gen. Kelley dispatched Capt. Dayton, Co. A, 4th Virginia Regiment, with 50 men, from Webster to disarm them. After scouting nearly 24 hours, he come suddenly on them at noon yesterday and after an hours severe fighting succeeded in killing 21 and putting the others to flight, without any loss to his command. The rebels numbered 200, composed of some of the worst characters of this county, lead on by Zack Cochran, Sheriff of Taylor county under the Letcher rule.
