Not to nitpick, but he was impeached, he was not convicted and removed.
Yes. I know that. The line in the post is a copy/paste from a Civil War history site, which is the way I put these posts together. Sometimes I edit these blurbs, but mostly I just plug them in and take the abuse.

People are often unaware of the roles played by Grant and Sherman in the drama. Johnson wanted Sherman to command a new military department of the District of Columbia. This would serve as a counter to attempts at forcibly removing him. Sherman saw the subterfuge and declined the honor of commanding an American praetorian guard.

Not to mention Uncle Billy really didn't like Johnson - nor did Grant.

President A. Johnson... Should be considered a hero by Presidential Historians for Johnson protected the office of president from an over reaching Congress... He defended the office with gusto... preserving the three branches as co-equals...

Sherman was an incredibly dangerous fellow at the end of the war - Stanton, for one, thought so! Sherman's army was absolutely loyal to him. When they thought Halleck had bad-mouthed Uncle Billy in the press, they refused to salute when he stood in his window as they passed by - turned their heads, in fact. And Sherman had once said he thought he should take his army into Washington and clean it out once and for all. That was Sherman bluster and steam tooting but it worried Stanton because Sherman could do just that - his army was camped right outside the city. Yes, indeed, Johnson wanted this general to have his back!

It was not until Johnson ignored the Congress and the laws it enacted over his vetoes that the Radicals gained the upper hand and began to maneuver him aside.

I do not know or think he ignored the laws that became enforced after his vetoes were overturned by Congress. He only ignore the law that restricted his ability to fire his cabinet officers, which any president should have ignored. Congress is the most powerful branch when working as one and Johnson defense of his office caused that united between the House and Senate against him.

He will make 2nd worst easily.
Johnson is definitely in the running for worst US president.
I ask why do you think he is in of the bottom two worse president ever... Historian have never the bottom...

LINK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histo...ngs,highest-rated presidents among historians

According to a Rasmussen poll conducted in 2007, six presidents—George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy—were rated favorably by at least 80% of Americans

Here is Johnson one score... 19
Andrew Johnson452619
Buchanan scoroed a -4
James Buchanan2832−4
Franklin Pierce1725−8
Millard Fillmore1725−8
Tyler ends up being a traitor to his nation in retirement
John Tyler915−6
Richard Nixon3260−28
George W. Bush4159−18

Maybe Johnson benefited from the white supremacist vote...
