I've always thought slavery was the main reason Texas wanted independence from Mexico, where it had been abolished. East Texas, especially. Cotton planters wanted to work there and that meant bringing in their slaves. I see the controversy over the Alamo taking the course the controversy over the Forrest Monument in Memphis took. The Alamo is a legendary battle with legendary figures who have become larger than reality to some in the course of time. Forrest, too, had taken on a legendary status that would have mystified him. When you begin to deal in that type of reverence, you begin to get into some truly deep bogs.

That's a nice article, thanks.

I do think the legend of Davy Crockett is important to understanding the truth of the Alamo. He was part of a previous migration into Tennessee and Kentucky from North Carolina and Virginia - a generation later, the same restless people were moving into eastern Texas. Gone to Texas! was on a lot of Tennessee doors!

Slavery definitely has to be considered in the telling of the history of the Alamo. It is vital to understanding why the saints of the Alamo came to be.
