IMHO one of the under-reported essential Civil War leaders. Without him, Grant is much less.
Indeed. He was a little weird but a fine admiral and a master of river warfare.

He was an immense asset to Grant, even if he was considerably difficult. Came by it naturally, though, since his dad was David Porter! Pa was a...free spirit. He adopted David Glasgow Farragut, who was then David Dixon Porter's brother. With that team and Foote upriver, Grant was in a fine position for river fighting.

In the western theater, the rivers were highways straight into the heart of the Confederacy and Grant recognized this. To his great good fortune, in Foote and Porter, he found guys who knew how to use those highways.
