A group of 8th graders visited my classroom last week. They might be placed in our special needs program next year. I put on a smile as the administrator shepherding them about introduced me. One of the kids asked me a question and I asked them to repeat it. "I'm a little deaf. I'm not apologizing, but I'm afraid you are going to be repeating things to me a lot." One of the kids grinned insolently and said, "teachers have to repeat a lot to me."
I said, "then we will be trapped in a repetition of failed attempts to communicate, A never ending cycle of mutual incomprehension, a nightmare we cannot escape from." I paused. The kids and others looked blank. I gave a double thumbs up. "Looking forward to it!" Silently, the kid also gave me a thumbs up.
