In a recent blast, former president Trump claims that taking down the statue of R.E.Lee was very, very bad and that Lee was a winner who would have won in Afghanistan.

While I consider Lee a great general, its hard to forget he wasn't the winner in the Civil War, and he had a hard time especially outside of Virginia.

Lee's greatest moment, as a man, in my opinion, was the dignity he expressed in defeat. In the words of a recent biographer, "he failed, without becoming a failure." That is the lesson the former president should take from Robert E. Lee.

Lee was a winner, except those times he wasn't. You know, Gettysburg and Appomattox.

Lee had no personal experience fighting a guerrilla war and surrendered rather than start one.

Trump's statement is also a criticism of the modern US military for not succeeding where Lee allegedly would have. Trump's administration negotiated the withdrawal of the US from Afghanistan. Not that pesky facts like that would register with the Trumpanzees.

In the 1850s he was stationed in Texas and charged with protecting settlers from the Apache and Comanche.
So I guess he had some experience with that type of warfare.

Yet Grant in complained years later the " Lee was behaving" badly. Lee never supported racial equality as did at least to a limited degree Longstreet, Forrest ( the Maypole Speech despite being the first Grandwizzard of the KKK) and Beauregard.

Nobody wins in Afghanistan! It's not the graveyard of empires, it's the hinge on which they swing.
Actually not true . The Sikhs managed to size one third of Afghanistan. It then became part of British India. Post independence it became part of Pakistan. In 1960 and 1962 the Afganhistan Army occupied part of Western Pakistan but did leave. That's why ever since Pakistan has intervened in Afganhistan when the opportunity arose

Yes, that's why it is the hinge. The strategic location is nestled in amongst the regions of empire and conquest and that is the place they invariably stub their toes. Persians, Mongols, Greeks...the Afghans just wait 'em out. It is expensive to the conqueror in every way, not to the 'conquered'. They have all the time in the world.

Pakistan...well, you would need a whole 'nother forum to discuss that aspect of Afghan affairs! There's a lot to unpack there but never forget water. Pakistan has one major water system it is dependent on - the Indus - whose origins are on the Tibetan Plateau. Afghanistan has an 'arm' connecting it to that plateau. (For example: Namibia has an 'arm' in the north connecting it to the major trade route of the Zambesi River system.)
