Yeah I know sorry, my feild of expertise doesn't fall into too much of the post war era. What's your opinion of Custer ? I think like most he was arrogant and he expected his tactics from the war to be super effective on Natives which reminds me of how the British were the best at open feild fighting the traditional way making them the best but when tested against the guerilla tactics used by the colonials it wasn't so effective any more.

I found more info on this ancestor of mine, he is my 3rd Great Grandfather Parlia Barnes Gavitt, Company D, 17th Infantry (The document or back of photo also said after the unit "Fort Rice Below: Dakota Terry then below that : With Custers Army. I'll also attach that photo with this info would anyone happen to know anything about this unit ? Also I'll attach a photo of his wife and the other document.

It sure is. Actually my Grandpa and I were going through some old family photos and found a large envelope with transcripts to old family letters and other info and I found a long letter that was written by that soldier up there that was sent in reply to his son in law so my great great grandma's husband. The letter was interesting because Parlia that's his name in the photo was talking about getting hit with a poison arrow and being 1 of 2 survivors. I'll see if I can get a good picture of the copied letter on here.
