May 25, 1863 - Clement Vallandigham is banished to the Confederacy for his "pro-Confederate remarks." The exchange took place at Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

That is what I would describe as "creative" laywering.
Wasn't that weird, though! I'm actually surprised more people didn't die that way - holsters were around for a long time before but designed more to protect the weapon than to have ready access to it. Hence - stick it in your belt or your pocket! However...you'd best be able to get it out. That's what happened to Lt Gould when he tried to off Forrest in a hallway - his gun was in his pocket and hung up on the lip of his duster. Which was what Vallandigham was theorizing happened to his client. Dude tried to pull his gun out of his pants and blam! See here, guys, this is what I mean...blam!

:p Forrest wasn't one of them! I've got a picture of him as a private - think it's the only one, too - and one of only two armed. His pistol is stuck in his belt, all right, but at a cautionary angle and the buckle is well to the side!
